What Does KolBo Filter Block?

Before committing to any filtering service, you want to know exactly what it does. What gets blocked? What stays accessible? How much control do you have over the configuration? Here's a detailed, transparent breakdown of what KolBo Filter blocks and how the system works.

Content Categories Blocked by Default

Every KolBo Filter setup blocks the following content categories at the system level using Apple Supervised Mode. These are the standard restrictions that form the baseline of every configuration.

Adult content: Explicit websites and content are blocked across all browsers on the device — not just Safari, but any browser that's permitted on the phone. The filtering uses Apple's built-in content classification combined with managed web filtering policies. Adult content isn't just hidden — it's inaccessible.

Social media: Apps like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter/X, and similar platforms are removed from the device and blocked from reinstallation. The App Store listing for these apps simply doesn't appear on a filtered device. This isn't a time limit or a usage restriction — the apps are gone and cannot come back without administrator action.

VPN apps: Virtual Private Networks are the most common tool used to bypass content filters. KolBo Filter blocks VPN app installation from the App Store, removes the manual VPN configuration option from Settings, and disables the VPN protocol at the network level. This is the single most important restriction for maintaining filter integrity.

Private browsing: Safari's private browsing mode is permanently disabled. The option to open a private tab is removed from the browser interface entirely. This prevents unmonitored browsing sessions that would bypass history-based accountability.

Gambling and betting: Online gambling sites and betting apps are blocked. This includes both web-based gambling platforms and App Store gambling applications.

Dating apps and sites: Dating platforms — both apps and websites — are blocked by default.

Explicit streaming: Streaming services that host explicit content are restricted. Mainstream streaming services can be individually allowed or blocked based on your preferences.

The Custom Allowlist

KolBo Filter isn't one-size-fits-all. Every family and individual has different needs, and the configuration reflects that. During setup, you specify which apps should remain on the device and which should be removed.

If you need WhatsApp for family communication, it stays. If you need Waze for navigation, it stays. Banking apps, email clients, business tools, productivity apps — anything you need for work or daily life can be whitelisted. The filter targets the content that doesn't belong on your phone, not the tools you depend on.

The App Store can be configured in several ways: fully restricted (no new app installations without administrator approval), partially open (only apps from approved categories can be downloaded), or open with specific apps blocked. You choose the level of restriction that fits your situation.

Feature-Level Restrictions

Beyond content and apps, KolBo Filter can configure feature-level restrictions that most people don't think about but that matter for comprehensive filtering. AirDrop can be restricted to prevent content sharing outside approved channels. The ability to modify email or Wi-Fi settings can be locked. Screen recording can be disabled. Account modification can be prevented so that new accounts can't be added to the device without administrator approval.

Not every setup needs every restriction. These are options available within supervised mode that can be enabled based on your specific requirements. The technician discusses these options during setup so you can make informed decisions about what to include.

What Stays Fully Functional

Filtering restricts content, not the phone's core capabilities. Phone calls work normally. Text messaging and iMessage work normally. The camera and photo library are unaffected. Approved apps run at full functionality. iCloud syncing continues. Siri works (with content restrictions applied to search results). Maps and navigation work. The phone remains a fully functional iPhone — it just operates within the boundaries you've defined.

Modifications After Setup

Life changes, and your filtering configuration can change with it. If you start a new job that requires an app that's currently blocked, call KolBo Filter and we'll add it to your allowlist. If you want to tighten restrictions — remove an app you initially kept, block a new category — that's handled with a quick configuration update. The management profile is maintained by KolBo Filter, so adjustments don't require bringing the phone back in.

Every subscription includes the KolBo app — over 695,000 Torah shiurim, Zmanim, Tefila Companion, Digital Library, Minyan Finder, and 13 tools for the frum community. Filtering removes content. The KolBo app fills the space with Torah.
